Brick Silo with Padlocked Sprout

Purpose On-farm storage of shelled or thresed grains
Capacity It can store up to 1 metric ton of grains
Advantage It can be built using burnt bricks, cassava starch for binding bricks on upper section of wall and cement mix for base ans smooth wall for rat proofing.
The discharge spout is made of metal tube with a metal cover that can be padlocked.
The silo top has a wooden cover with padlock to prevent theft; earlier models did not have both devices and therefore adoption rates by farmers were low as the out-door storaga proofed to be insecure.
Disadvantage Filling the silo and inspection requires the removal of the roof and a platform.
Cost US$ 140 (Uganda)
Market potential / Status About 10 farmers have adopted the improved design and 15 more farmers will build their silos in Apac District, Uganda
(December 1999)
Discharge spout avaiable from: Tonnet Enterprises, Gayaza Road, just after Kalerwe Market, P.O. Box 3163, Kamapla. Mobil Phone: 077-413754
Spout can be fabricated by any metal workshop (see inset picture inset).
