Livestock Market Information (National Livestock Productivity Improvement Project (NLPIP) funded by ADB


The MAAIF/FOODNET livestock market information project is designed to provide a livestock market information service for producers, processors, policy makers, traders and general public.

 The service is to provide farmers with marketing information from their immediate markets and other national demand centers of Kampala, Jinja and Mbale and also provide them with educational information on how they can use information to improve their negotiating skills at the time of sale and identify markets with the best prices

The service aims to empower farmers with up to date, accurate information on the market conditions in their locality. This information will enable farmers to have a better understanding of market trends, market problems and underlying reasons for price premiums. This knowledge will enable farmers to negotiate for better market prices based on an informed position.

IThe Livestock Marketing information is a sub-project of the Livestock marketing component under the National Livestock Productivity Improvement Project NLPIP in the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries.

The President His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in Soroti launched the project in October 2004.

Other Sub-projects include Livestock restocking and genetic improvement, Veterinary Regulations enforcement, Epidemic disease, Tsetse and tick control.

NLPIP is funded by the Africa Development Bank.

The Livestock Marketing component specifically will handle issues on Marketing infrastructure, Value addition for hides and skins create a Livestock inventory and the Livestock Marketing Information.

Livestock marketing information, which is operated by FOODNET Market Information Service, will collect data, analyze and disseminate marketing information on livestock from 29 districts in the cattle corridor.

The benefits of using Market Information are many but the main aim is to equip especially farmers with the latest prices in the market so that they are not cheated and in this way, they will improve their household incomes

Radio dissemination
Ø       CBS Friday 11:30-11:50 am (1 price bulletin and feature spots on advisory livestock management and marketing)

Ø       Radio West Friday 7: 00-7:45pm (I price bulletin and feature magazine programme)

Ø       Voice of Teso Tuesdays, Thursdays (2 price bulletins feature magazine programme on Thursday)

Ø       Voice of Kitara Masindi Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and (3 price bulletins and 1 feature magazine on Sunday 7:15-7:30 pm)
